What is the best way to explain to a third grader what a unit is in Syngapore math?

If your 3rd grader has difficulty understanding what a unit is, you can try to replace the word "unit" with "part" or "portion". They would probably have these 2 words in their daily vocabulary. However, the word "unit" is not something that they used in their daily conversations.
